Metro volunteers to instill civic sense

After failing to stop commuters from pushing and shoving, littering and squatting on its trains and stations, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has enlisted the help of over 100 volunteers to instill civic sense among users.

After failing to stop commuters from pushing and shoving, littering and squatting on its trains and stations, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has enlisted the help of over 100 volunteers to instill civic sense among users.

These volunteers have joined DMRC’s ‘Citizens Forum’ to help the Metro administration in instilling better behaviour, etiquette and discipline among other commuters. The 100, who are regular Metro users, would ensure seats are provided to women and senior citizens, no one squats or plays loud music on trains and maintain discipline while boarding and de-boarding trains.

The volunteers, chosen from 1,000 enthusiasts, were given Citizens Forum badges

on Sunday after a day-long training-cum-orientation programme called “Sahyog”.

“I recently saw a senior citizen standing in a train while youngsters kept sitting. I thought something should be done to instill values,” said Dr Gyan Singh, a dental surgeon and volunteer.

“They were trained in customer orientation, etiquette, co-operation with passengers, ticketing procedures, boarding — deboarding from trains, security mechanism, disaster management and cleanliness,” DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said. The Citizens Forum initiative was launched a month back and it received good response from commuters.
