“Height of intolerance!” tweeted Modi on his twitter handle @narendramodi where he also posted a photo of the bill issued by the restaurant.

He also added links to a newspaper photograph of the bill for Rs 240, which read at the bottom: “As per UPA govt eating money (2G, coal, CWG scam) is a necessity and eating food in AC restaurants is a luxury.”

Modi’s tweet was promptly retweeted even as Congress leaders held that their workers had not forced the closure of the restaurant.

Sanjay Kaul, a BJP supporter, said on twitter: Forget the meal, I am willing to pay R240 just for the bill. Another tweet said, “You were so concerned about shutting down of a stupid (anti-Modi) web page. Why no response now?”

The police have registered a non-cognisable offence against owner Srinivas Shetty under section 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) of the IPC.
