MOIA to create database to ensure students’ safety abroad

Concerned over the security of its students abroad in view of the recent attacks on them, the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) has started a project to set up a data base of students going out of the country to keep track of them to ensure their safety.

Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi informed the Lok Sabha that under the project ‘E-Governance in Emigration´ the details of Indian students going overseas for education will be registered to create a data base and the process was expected to be completed by end of next year.

He said the objective of the project is to “transform the process of mobility of Indian workers and students going abroad into a simple and transparent process.”

“The project is being implemented with the technical assistance of the National Institute of Smart Government and is targeted for completion by the end of 2010,” Ravi said.

The project, first of its kind, was taken up after the Ministry realised that there was no statistics available with the government to keep track of its citizens abroad to ensure their well-being and safety in view of the recent violent attacks on Indian students in Australia.
