Valliathan committee was set up by the health ministry in 2006 to look into the functioning of AIIMS and make recommendations for enhancing and strengthening the autonomy of the institute to enable it to fulfill its objectives.

The meeting headed by Ghulam Nabi Azad, union health minister, who is also the president of AIIMS lasted 4.5 hours. "The body accepted most points that were in favour of improving the institute, mainly research and teaching incentives for the faculty," said a source on condition of anonymity.

"The body could not reach a consensus on rotating headship of medical departments within AIIMS. It is a sensitive topic and will require discussions with the faculty."

The institute body also approved the money for the up-gradation of the K L Wig centre for medical education technology "The Valliathan Committee wanted a full fledged centre for continuing research activities within AIIMS, which the body gave an immediate consent to," said a ministry source, adding that a go-ahead was given to a separate Dean-Research position at AIIMS.

The ministry also approved a two-yearly leave for the faculty after every five years so that they could use the time for research and study purposes.
