In a bid to reduce traffic congestion on city roads, about 40% of the 104 km long metro corridors is proposed to be underground, said sources. They said that most of the underground work will be done with the help of tunnel boring machines, new Austrian tunneling method and stations will be constructed with the help of the cut and cover technology.

Presently, Delhi Metro has a total of 31 underground stations that were built in phase 1 and 2. Phase 3 alone will have 28 underground stations. The total length of the underground corridor presently is 48.06 km (13.17 km in phase 1 and 34.89 km in phase 2) while phase 3 alone will have underground corridors of 41 km.

The 17 km stretch connecting IGI Airport and Kalkaji on the Janakpuri West – Kalindi Kunj corridor will be the longest underground section of Phase 3. The Mukundpur – Yamuna Vihar corridor will have underground lines of 14.40 km and Central Secretariat – Kashmere Gate corridor will have a total of 9.37 km of underground lines.

“Tenders have been finalised for the construction of the Mandi House and Janpath stations on the Central Secretariat – Kashmere Gate corridor,” said a spokesperson of DMRC.
