The civic body has invited expression of interest to assess whether technology is available in India to carry out such a large-scale project.

The ‘district cooling system’ is water based central air-conditioning system, which will regulate warm or cool temperature across all blocks of the market depending on the weather conditions.

“The cooling system is a first of its kind in the country — such water-based systems have been used in Dubai and US,” said a senior NDMC official.

“This is one of the reasons we wanted to find out whether such technology and expertise is available in India. The project is at a very nascent stage,” the official said.

The traders of the market have made their own personal arrangement for air-conditioning their shops currently.
