New parking lot to benefit Old Delhi
The congested Old Delhi area will soon have another parking facility for around 400 cars at Aruna Asaf Ali Marg opposite LNJP Hospital. This will hopefully resolve the parking problem in Daryaganj and other nearby areas.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will construct the parking in place of the existing office of the deputy commissioner (city zone).
The decision was taken following directions from MCD commissioner KS Mehra to shift the deputy commissioner’s office from Aruna Asaf Ali Road to the newly built 28-storey Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre on Minto Road.
Currently, the three-level basement of the building is already being used as parking but commuters are still forced to park on the road as the space is not sufficient.
According to a senior MCD official, once trifurcation is implemented, many offices will be shifted out of the Civic Centre so that the deputy commissioner’s office can be shifted there.
“The commissioner has decided to allot office space to the city zone at the Civic Centre’s E block as lots of space is available. The shifting process will start soon,” said a senior official.
Currently, the three levels of underground parking can accommodate 1,400 vehicles.
“The new parking space will benefit local residents in Daryaganj, Delhi Gate, and visitors at the hospital,” a senior official said. He added that it became difficult to accommodate cars whenever there were matches at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium and additional parking space would solve part of the problem.
