The police will be procuring an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) system from a Noida-based company to track vehicle movements in real time and trace the defaulters and realise the fine from them, said a Delhi Police official.

ANPR is a mass surveillance method that uses optical character recognition on images to read the registration plates on vehicles. The gadget is used by police forces for cataloguing the movements of vehicular traffic and tracing the defaulters.

“We are planning to purchase a mobile ANPR system to trace the vehicles which did not pay the fines despite being issued notice. We have a database of about 2 lakh such vehicles which were issued notices but did not pay fine,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

The system, which has been used on a trial basis for a week recently, has traced a total of 266 defaulters and helped traffic police realise a sum of Rs 8,400. Police hope that the computerised system that would cost around Rs 14 lakh would be purchased within a month or two.
