The nine escaped following chaos that broke out after more than four-dozen inmates, suspected to be a part of the infamous ‘Fire Brand’ gang, set their beddings on fire. The centre houses 50 juveniles.

“The incident was reported from the Seva Kutir (detention centre) located in Mukherjee Nagar at 9 pm on Friday night,” said N.S Bundela DCP (northwest). The police said the nine escaped while four fire tenders were trying to put out the fire.

"The juveniles got into a scuffle with the security guards and officials who had rushed to the sleeping area of the centre to ensure their safety,” said a senior police officer. The police said the juveniles also pelted stones to divert the officials’ attention.

“The boys started pelting stones at us and even damaged one of the four fire tenders," the officer said. The police said the matter was under investigation.
