The fire was allegedly set by a group of inmates lodged at the Mukerjee Nagar juvenile observation home last night.

"While the security guards and other officials rushed to the sleeping area to ensure safety of the inmates and fire tenders were busy in putting out the blaze, juveniles entered into a scuffle with the authorities and nine out of them escaped in the ensuing melee," a senior police officer said.

Some juveniles allegedly set afire their beddings and doors at the observation home protesting the lack of the amenities there.

According to police, they also indulged in stone-pelting to divert the attention of officials.

Some of the inmates had allegedly created a ruckus for several hours in front of juvenile Justice Board office at Delhi Gate earlier on Friday.
