No approach road to carry garbage to plant
Delhi’s waste will continue to spill over for some more time. The waste-to-energy plant coming up at Okhla that claims to turn 2,000 metric tones — about one-quarter of the total garbage produced by Delhiites every day — into electricity has hit a new hurdle.

There is no approach road to carry the garbage to the site. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi had recently come up with a plan to build an approach road. But due to protests from residents of the area and the councillors this week, the proposal had to be postponed.
The MCD had proposed two roads. The first proposal was to build an approach road from Mathura Road via DJB land. The other proposal was to build the road from Jasola Stadium via DDA flats.
According to a senior official of MCD, the first plan was cancelled because the DJB refused to hand over the land. In the second case, residents protested as the garbage will be carried through colonies and will generate a lot of bad odour.
A senior civic agency official said that they has been directed to speak to the residents and come up with a solution. “Till the time the approach road is constructed, the garbage cannot be carried to the plant,” he said.
Area councillor Dharamvir Singh says the residents have been opposing the approach road in particular and the plant on general because it will lead to contamination of water and air in the area and even the rest of Delhi.
“Right now the organisation making the plant has said that all garbage carried to the plant will be covered but as years pass by, they may not follow regulations and that will pollute the adjoining areas,” he said.
The Okhla waste-to-energy plant project is being built by M/s Jindal and is expected generate 16.5 MW of electricity.
