Police said they were looking into “every possible angle” and “depending a lot on forensic examinations”.

Police said two bullets were fired at the journalist, driving to her Vasant Kunj home after a late-night shift.

One bullet killed the journalist while the other hit the front registration plate of the Maruti Zen car.

The bullet fired at the journalist was .315 bore, commonly used in countrymade guns.

Soumya worked as a producer with Headlines Today at their office in Jhandewalan.

Sources said a bullet was also fired at the car’s right, front tyre causing it to puncture but police did not confirm it. The car was taken to the Central Forensic Science Lab (CFSL) here for further examination.

Police also examined the call details of Soumya’s cellphone but found no leads.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, south, H.G.S. Dhaliwal said, “The motive is not clear. Road rage is one of the possibilities. The mark on the registration plate looks like a bullet mark but it will be ascertained by forensic experts.”

Anil Kumar, 30, who works as a janitor at restaurant Punjabi By Nature, was the first to see the car.

Police said he did not witness the murder. “He saw the car wobble and then stop after moving some distance. With the help of a taxi operator he called the police at 3:40am,” said Dhaliwal.Theories
