No faulty traffic signals from July

The traffic police chief has given a deadline of July for traffic signals to start functioning “flawlessly”. The police are going to replace the 76 existing traffic signals including the 36 signals that come under the Games venues.

The state government had recently asked the Delhi police's traffic department to ensure that traffic signals at all the intersections work flawlessly during the Games.

The department had identified old, outdated and faulty signal systems to replace them immediately.

“We are revamping the traffic signalling system in Delhi keeping the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in mind. Signals falling on streetscaping projects by PWC and Metro projects by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will also be included under the revamping drive,” said Ajay Chadha, Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic.

He said the department has issued work orders for the same in April and the installation would be complete by July, three months before the Commonwealth Games.

Sources in the department said the new lights are pedestal signals, which are perfect for high traffic areas. These signs, installation of each is expected between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 8 lakh, are small enough to be out of the way but big enough to be seen. They are light weight, portable, easy to set up or relocate.
