No link between bullets, Italians yet

It has been 10 days since 24 rounds of military grade ammunition were found in the air-conditioning duct of a five-star hotel near the IGI Airport. But the Special Cell of the Delhi police is yet to find a link between the bullets and the three Italians it has detained on suspicion.

The Italians were charged with smuggling ammunition into the country.

The Delhi Police had issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) after recovering ammunitions from a room of Radisson Hotel, located near the IGI Airport, they had checked in on May 24.

Police said they have not been able to find any “substantial links” between the ammunition and the accused. But they are not taking any chances and have not given the foreigners a clean chit yet.

The detained were identified as Giovanni Cecconella (42), Gulio Pomelto (46) and Donato D' Angelo (43). They were brought to the Capital from Mumbai on May 27.

The police had recovered 24 live cartridges of .357 bore German made SIG Sauer pistol, two empty magazines and two springs from the hotel room. The housekeeping staff of the hotel had found it and immediately informed the police.

The police said Gulio Pomelto, who had checked into the hotel around 1:00 am on May 24, had stayed in that room for seven hours before leaving for Pune.

Gulio’s room number was 448, while Giovanni Cecconella and Donato D’ Angelo stayed in room number 474 and 349, respectively.

The police was also in constant touch with the Italian Embassy and are checking into the antecedents of the men.
