The party also rejected the charge that it was stalling the Ayodhya verdict and instead blamed the BJP and other Sangh Parivar outfits for delaying the judgment.

“We want the law to take its own course and the judgment should come,” Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh said.

His statement came amid allegations that the Congress had played a role in getting the Ayodhya verdict deferred. The BJP has maintained that the Supreme Court directive was “a little out of the ordinary”.

Last week, another party general secretary and media department chief Janardan Dwivedi had welcomed the apex court’s deferment decision and said this should be appreciated by all concerned.

Dwivedi also reiterated his party’s position on the dispute, saying the best option was to resolve the issue through talks between the two sides.

“If such an amicable settlement is not possible every side should abide by the court verdict,” he said.

On its part, the Congress has distanced itself from petitioner R.C. Tripathi, saying he had nothing to do with the party. “He is not a member of the Congress,” Singh said.

Tripathi is the nephew of former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Satish Mishra.

Singh said Tripathi’s lawyer Mukul Rohtagi was also representing Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.

“Then how come the Congress is stalling the Ayodhya judgement. What else can you expect from such a lawyer,” Singh said.
