While some colleges have asked students to give in writing that they won't indulge in ragging and violent activities, others have introduced a dress code for female students.

One college has advised students not to use "improper" words in their email IDs.

The district administration has asked all colleges to provide addresses and phone numbers of their students to the local police.

Students, obviously, are not amused.

"We are students and not criminals whose records should be maintained by the police," said Nidhi Sharma, a management student who refused to give the name of her college.

Giving details, H.Chaturvedi, director of BIMTECH, a professional college in Greater Noida, said: "We will make students take oath that they will not indulge in violence or ragging and help in maintaining peace and tranquility in the campus and outside."

Ishan Institute of Management and Technology chairman Dr D.K. Garg said his institute had also introduced a dress code.

"The dress code will ensure that students wear decent clothes. Girls have been advised not to wear dresses that unnecessary expose their body," Garg said.

There's a code for email IDs as well.

"We have also asked students to create email IDs that reflect their personality and refrain from making IDs such as sweetkisses, ILU2000 and so on," said Garg.

Senior Divisional Magistrate Vishal Singh said colleges had been directed to provide a list of students, mentioning their local guardians, contact numbers and their detailed addresses.

Around 80,000 students study in over 50 management and engineering colleges in Greater Noida. Most of them are from outside the district. Few live in hostels while others live in rented accommodation, Singh said.

"Student clashes are on the rise. Also, residents complain of eve teasing by college students. Many race bikes leading to accidents," Singh said.

The magistrate said the move would act as deterrent as students would think twice before clashing or joining hands with anti social elements.
