The Capital witnessed huge traffic jams on the second consecutive day as most roads in New Delhi remained clogged due to VVIP movement for the BRICS summit.
Traffic restrictions had been put in place on Wednesday in the view of the BRICS summit. Tibetan protests throughout the city added to the chaos, as the number of barricades were increased on all routes leading to New Delhi area. This led to traffic jams on connecting roads.
The BRT stretch and the road to ITO was completely clogged as heavy police checking was in place to stop Tibetan protesters from reaching the Oberoi hotel, where the Chinese president is staying.
The traffic advisory issued by the traffic police said Sardar Patel Marg, from Dhaula Kuan to Panchsheel Marg, would remain closed for traffic for a few hours on Wednesday evening and from 8.30am to 4pm on Thursday. Roads, however, were blocked for the whole day.
“The BRICS summit has caused us much trouble. The police should have put a better traffic plan in place. They only thought of the VIP movement and forgot about the common man,” said Ankita Banerjee, a resident of Jangpura.
Going from Connaught Place to Gurgaon was also a nightmare as traffic movement on Sardar Patel Marg was restricted.
