A 35-year-old woman suffered serious burns during an alleged self-immolation bid at her northeast Delhi home on Sunday, police said.

Police say, the incident occurred at Rajni Kulshreshtha’s gali number 8, Subhash Park residence in Shahdara around 1 pm on Sunday.

She took the step allegedly after her family refused to let her to go for an outing with her friend, police said. “When she was denied permission, she doused herself with kerosene and threatened to set herself ablaze,” said a police officer.

Rajni suffered 75 per cent burns after she accidentally backed into a lit candle.

“She wanted to scare her family. But things went awry when her clothes, dripping with kerosene, came in contact with a burning candle that she herself had lit,” the officer said.
