In a first of its kind, a Delhi-based doctor has devised a mobile application called "Smidr" that helps the user to find, research and review doctors in their choice of locality using their smartphones.

"Booking an appointment with the doctor of your choice using your smartphone is a common thing in the developed parts of the world. But in India, this is a very unique concept. We usually rely on the advice of the receptionist at the hospital to book us with a doctor but there is no way to review or research on the doctor before making an appointment," said Dr Vivek Sama, managing director at Sama Healthcare, who is the mastermind behind the mobile app.

"This not only gives a ready-to-use health directory to the user but also pampers him with a variety of options in his choice of locality," said Sama.

He also explains that the name of the app, Smidr, is abstract and does not mean anything. "I deliberately wanted to keep it abstract and catchy. It has letters from 'smile' and has 'dr' in it, conveying smile doctor," he said.

Smidr, which is an iOS and Android app, contains India's largest database of doctors, classified by specialty and by location. The app also contains listings of hospitals, laboratories, chemists, and specialty clinics.

"Smidr is absolutely free and we would like to promote it among the Android and iOS community. We had launched the iOS a few months back but there were some glitches, which we have taken care of. Now we are ready to re-launch both for the Android and iOS platforms together," said Dr Sama.
