Now, SMS to complain about errant auto drivers

Registering a complaint against an autorickshaw driver who refuses to take you to your destination, overcharges or misbehaves with you is just an SMS away.

Registering a complaint against an autorickshaw driver who refuses to take you to your destination, overcharges or misbehaves with you is just an SMS away.

If an autorickshaw driver refuses to go, one will have to type REF, vehicle number, location, time of refusal and send it to 56767 from his/her mobile phone. Similarly, for overcharging, he has to type OVC, MIS for misbehaviour and HAR for harassment and send it with the above mentioned details (as in case of refusal) to the same number.

To check errant autorickshaw drivers, the Delhi traffic police have decided to popularise the service among masses. Prior to the Commonwealth Games in 2010, the traffic police had introduced a similar facility but failed to make it successful.

"We plan to put up a display board in every autorickshaw, mentioning how to register a complaint through SMS. We will take up the matter with the transport department soon," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

The police are also working out on modalities to send an auto-generated text message to the complainant, acknowledging the receipt of the complaint along with a complaint registration number, so that he/she can follow up on the action taken.

"We will take action on such complaints with top priority and send challan notices to defaulters within 24 hours. After notice is served, the complainant will receive another SMS, which will apprise him about the action taken. The details of the violation and action will also be uploaded on our Facebook page," Garg said.

The Delhi police receive hundreds of complaints against such autorickshaw drivers daily. "But many people do not take the pain of registering complaints as it is a time-taking process," said a traffic police official.

The traffic police said the SMS service would help reduce harassment by autorickshaw drivers to a large extent and encourage people to use public transport.
