Prior to this Delhi Traffic Police only had the power to impose a fine of Rs 2,000 and impounding the vehicle.

“We will have both the options to arrest and impose fine on motorists who cross over on the dedicated lanes,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic). The police said most of the vehicles that have been challaned are big cars.

The prohibitive section empowers the police to make the arrests under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant). The section also has provisions to extend the imprisonment to six months if the offender causes any harm to the policeman.

With this other sections of Motor Vehicle Act will be slapped on the offending vehicle.

So far, more than 200 people have been prosecuted for deliberately driving on the Games lane.
“There have been several instances where people have created unruly scenes. But we are used to handling such problems,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

Of the 20 troublesome roads on the list of Delhi Traffic Police, nine are part of the dedicated Commonwealth Games lane where convoys will ferry delegates and athletes, the police said.

Apart from the Games lane, there are 35 trouble spots where the dedicated and the normal traffic is merging.
From Wednesday, the Delhi traffic Police will deploy volunteers specially trained to tackle traffic on the Games lane who will assist them in managing traffic.

Apart from these volunteers policewomen from Nagaland, who have been sanctioned as part of the central police force, will be deployed on these routes to help ease congestion.
