Kohli replaces Harsh Vardhan, the Krishna Nagar MLA who had completed two terms in office.

The appointment of Kohli, presently the BJP Parliamentary Party office secretary, was made by party chief Rajnath Singh, a party communique said.

Harsh Vardhan's term had ended in last September and he had been given an extension for three months.

The BJP had suffered its third consecutive defeat at the hands of the Congress in the Delhi Assembly elections.

Soon after the defeat in the Assembly elections, Harsh Vardhan had expressed his desire to step down from the post and
wrote to Singh and BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani to expedite the process for appointing a new chief for the Delhi unit.

There has been hectic lobbying for the post as party General Secretary Vijay Goel, former Opposition Leader Jagdish Mukhi, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta and some MLA like Nand Kishore Garg vying for the post.
