Phoolan Devi murder case: HC grants bail to co-accused

Amit Rathi, one of the accused in the murder of former Samajwadi Party MP Phoolan Devi, was on Thursday granted bail by the Delhi High Court, after remaining in jail for eight years.

Justice S Muralidhar while granting bail to Rathi directed him not to leave the country without court’s permission and asked him to surrender his passport before the trial court.

The court said the accused will appear before the trial court on the date fixed by it for hearing of the matter besides submitting his present residential address.

The accused had to furnish a personal bond of Rs one lakh with a local surety of the like amount.

Rathi, who was in jail since August 2001, is the second out of the eleven accused who has been granted bail by the Court.

Earlier, the trial court has granted bail to Keshav Chauhan, who was the domestic help of the late Lok Sabha MP.

Accepting the police report about the status of the murder trial that so far 135 out of 181 witnesses have been examined and for the rest 45, the court would take some time, Rathi was granted bail.
