Physicians of indian origin join hands

In a bid to improve health care scenario in the country, more than 1.2 million physicians of Indian origin, practicing across the globe, joined hands recently to form an advocacy group to create awareness within the government about the needs of the sector.

In a bid to improve health care scenario in the country, more than 1.2 million physicians of Indian origin, practicing across the globe, joined hands recently to form an advocacy group to create awareness within the government about the needs of the sector.

Global Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (GAPIO) was launched recently with the aim of providing common platform to physicians of Indian origin to voice their opinions.

Dr Prathap C Reddy, chairman of the Apollo Hospitals group, who is also president of the GAPIO's executive committee, along with Dr Sanku Rao, vice president (consultant gastroenterologist, USA), Dr Ramesh Mehta, secretary general (consultant pediatrician, UK), emphasised the need for greater visibility and cohesion of physicians.

"GAPIO has the vision of improving health globally. A Google search for 'Indian doctor' yields 35.7 million results in 0.1 seconds. The Indian doctor today, stands tall. It is time for them to influence not only the health of individuals and communities but, global health," he said.
