Pilgrim deaths: SC notices to Centre, J&K

Taking cognisance of the death of 67 Amarnath pilgrims in the first 17 days of the yatra this year, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir governments and the head of the Amarnath Shrine Board, asking them to explain the lack of proper facilities for pilgrims.

Taking cognisance of the death of 67 Amarnath pilgrims in the first 17 days of the yatra this year, the Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir governments and the head of the Amarnath Shrine Board, asking them to explain the lack of proper facilities for pilgrims.

A bench of justice BS Chauhan and justice Swantanter Kumar issued the notices on the basis of reports published in Hindustan Times and other newspapers. While 105 pilgrims died during the 45-day yatra last year, 67 have died in the first 17 days this year.
