In an interview with the NDTV, he said, "The essence is that the political authority that the Prime Minister must exercise that he is unable to do because of the nature of the political arrangement. The PM is not just a political leader, he is not just the leader of his own party, he is a leader of the country and thereby there is a certain authoruity that he has which he then puts under disposal of the government to take certain difficult decisions."

Reacting to this, Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan said that it was an extraordinary remark by Sanjay Baru.

She said, "It's impossible to serve second term as PM without having that kind of authority that PM should exercise. This was an arrangement that has lasted and has acted in a mutualy beneficient way and no matter what sanjay baru says or others may comment upon".
