Police, CISF track down 10,488 Metro Romeos in a year

The number of men penalised for travelling in women's coaches last year was 10 times higher than the previous year. In 2011, 892 men were fined, while the number increased to 10,488 in 2012, according to Delhi Police.

It seems men love to travel in Delhi Metro coaches reserved for women, if one were to go by numbers.

According to women commuters, men often stand at the end of a reserved coach, stare and even pass lewd comments. The area that connects the women's coach to the other coaches is also a favourite spot for couples but police are also dealing with them strictly.

"We formed several teams to nab men travelling in reserved coaches. Due to regular drives, the number of people fined is much higher in 2012," Sanjay Bhatia, DCP (railways), said.

Fine for the offence is Rs. 250 and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has collected over Rs. 25 lakh in fines so far.

"Joint CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) and DMRC teams, along with the Delhi Police, conduct random checks to make sure men do not sneak into women's coaches," a CISF official said.
