Till now, the DDA gave such a benefit to only those with physical disabilities. Those with mental illnesses were left out.

Such a preference is usually given to entrepreneurs with disabilities so that they can set up factories or for building of special recreation centres and special schools.

A bench of chief justice D Murugesan and justice VK Jain also directed the DDA to incorporate a condition while allotting land to cooperative societies — they too should give preference to persons with disabilities. The directions came on a PIL filed by All India Confederation for the Blind.
