President Mukherjee calls for efficiency to meet increasing energy demand

On energy conservation day on Friday, President Pranab Mukherjee talked about equitable access to energy and a time-bound shift to cleaner and energy efficient technologies.

Giving energy conservation awards on Friday, President said that India's demand for energy will double and the need for imported energy would increase by 8% annually, while stressing on the need for energy conservation.

The day also saw an international exhibition on energy efficient lighting - LED Expo 2012 - taking place at Pragiti Maidan, in which over 400 exhibitors displayed their products. The LED industry has grown by over 47% in the last one year, fastest in the world.

"We expect the industry to be worth Rs 2,200 crore in a few years," said Himani Gulati, organizer of the expo.
