The principal and four other staffers of the municipal school in which a seven-year-old girl was sexually assaulted on Thursday were suspended on Saturday. However, the police are yet to arrest anyone directly involved in the case.
This despite the questioning of over 200 people and the preparation of a sketch of the assailant, who victimised the seven-year-old.
Police did, however, arrest 17 persons for rioting outside the school located in the L-block of the area. An enraged mob had run riot on Friday with local residents demanding that the culprit(s) be identified and brought to book immediately.
"Though the area remained more or less peaceful, stray incidents of violent outbursts were reported on Saturday," said an officer.
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has suspended five staff members, including the principal and the class teacher of the victim.
Following the sexual assault case, it has been decided that additional commissioner (education) Deepak Hastir would be relieved from his responsibility. According to sources, commissioner PK Gupta is unhappy with Hastir's functioning.
Gupta has also constituted a committee headed by additional commissioner (engineering) Pawan Sharma to inquire and fix the responsibility of the staff.
The committee has also been asked to suggest measures for strengthening security for students studying in the school run by the north body. It has been asked to submit its report within three days.
Meanwhile, senior police officers visited the spot to oversee investigations in the case. The police are also questioning the non-teaching staff of the school.
