Prisoner escapes from hospital, held
A jail inmate who escaped from a city hospital on Thursday was cornered hours later by the police in Ballabgarh, his hometown.
Police sources said Sonu alias Rahul, who is serving judicial custody in the Gurgaon jail, was admitted in the civil hospital on January 14 for treatment of an arm fracture.
“Sonu had managed to open the lock of his door on Wednesday night but waited for the right time to flee. During the wee hours when the constable on duty went to the washroom, the undertrial escaped,” said a senior police officer.
Police authorities immediately swung into action and apprehended him a few hours later from Ballabgarh, around 31 kilometres from Gurgaon.
Interestingly, the four constables who were deputed to guard Sonu only chased him down and caught him.
The prisoner was probably feeling homesick, police officials added.
“He has now been booked under Section 224 of the Indian Penal Code (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) and was produced before the court. No action has been initiated against the constables on duty as they managed to nab him again,” the officer further said.
Sonu was serving a jail term under a case of theft and attempt to murder.
“He was arrested in June 2009 under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and 379 (theft) and has been in jail since then,” the officer added.
Police sources claimed Sonu was admitted in the general ward of the hospital instead of the inmate ward.
