Proposal to reserve wards with odd numbers for women

The State Election Commission has made a proposal under which, wards with odd numbers will be reserved for women candidates in the coming municipal elections in April, sources said.
If this proposal is accepted, then the seats of prominent councillors such as Subhash Arya, who is currently holding the post of Leader of the MCD House, Yogender Chandolia, the Standing Committee chairman, Kanwar Sain and Prithvi Raj Sawhney, who have held the positions of Mayor earlier, Suman Kumar Gupta, a member of the Standing Committee, Farhad Suri, a Congress councillor, among others will be safe.
But seats of works committee chairman Jagdish Mamgain, standing committee member VP Pandey, chairman of medical health committee VK Monga, BJP councillor Moolchand Chawla and leader of opposition Jai Kishan Sharma might not be safe.
The Commission will make a presentation on Wednesday in this regard. "A presentation has been prepared," said a senior official.
The Commission has also called up an all-party meeting, which will be attended by municipal councillors, members of legislative members and other political members. Reservation for women and SC/ST will be discussed.
However, the sources added that the proposal would be accepted only if it gets the green signal from Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and members of different political parties.
To give more representation to women, Sheila Dikshit had reserved 50 per cent seats for them in the civic agency. This means that out of the 272 seats, 134 will be reserved for women candidates. Delhi has become the first state to introduce it.
However, the seat distribution might be changed slightly due to the overall reservation for the SC/ST seats too.
