“It is something he will decide, party high command will decide, the people of India will decide,” spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan said in response to a spate of queries on the issue. But when asked when Gandhi will take over, she said: “I am not an astrologer….I am not the leader of the Congress.”
At the same time, she said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has done an excellent job in heading the Centre for the last seven years. “Manmohan Singh is our PM and he continues to be that.”
She refused to elaborate when asked whether would complete his term as prime minister in UPA-II.
Natarajan hailed Gandhi as a youth icon and a future leader of the party. Her remarks came a day after general secretary Digvijaya Singh said it was time Gandhi became the PM.
Significantly, a day after he led the call for Rahul-as-PM, Singh on Monday claimed that he had never said that it was “high time” for the Amethi MP to become PM. “I have never said “high time”…I have said he has got full potential to become a good prime minister,” he said.
