Railways' first quarter earnings grew by over 7 pc

Indian Railways' earnings grew by over 7 per cent in the first quarter of this fiscal, the railway ministry said today.

Indian Railways' earnings grew by over 7 per cent in the first quarter of this fiscal, the railway ministry said on Friday.

It earned Rs 22,061.13 crore between April 1 to June 30 against Rs 20,610.63 crore garnered during the same period last year, registering a growth of 7.04 per cent, a ministry statement said.

The earnings from the passenger movement grew by 6.69 per cent and from goods transport 7.20 per cent. Earnings from other sources clocked a growth of 8.35 per cent.

While revenue from goods transport went up from Rs 13,927.05 crore to Rs 14,930.11 crore, the earnings from passenger traffic grew from Rs 5,802.66 crore to Rs 6,190.70 crore. Other earnings grew from Rs 577.78 crore to Rs 626.01 crore, the statement said.

It added the approximate number of passenger bookings during April-June 2010 stood at 1,937.22 million compared to 1836.51 million during the same period last year, an increase of 5.48 per cent.
