Railways to introduce new AC-3 coaches

The new design increased seating capacity AC three tier coaches that will enable the Railways to reduce fares in this category, will be put into use within one year’s time and will be attached to all new trains announced in the Rail Budget.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, who inspected one such trial coach at New Delhi station on Tuesday, said fares in the category would be cut only after these new design coaches become operational.As many as 2,500 such coaches will be built each year.

Prasad emphasised that the coaches were being designed in such a manner that passengers’ comfort would not be compromised while increasing the number of berths from 64 to 72.In the new coaches, there will be three side berths instead of two as in the old coaches.

The Minister , who also conducted a surprise inspection of the New Delhi- Kalka Shatabdi Express, was told by passengers that the quality of food provided on the train was not upto the mark and must be improved.
