During his visit, as part of tradition of foreign dignitaries, he will plant a sapling at the memorial. As part of the preparations, the walls of the memorial were also whitewashed.

On Tuesday, between 11am and 3pm, US authorities checked the perimeter — details of number of gates, height of walls etc — as part of the security measure.

“We have to finish the work today (Tuesday), that is the deadline given to us. We also watered the plants, as most had withered,” said Pushpa, one of the gardeners at Raj Ghat.

President Obama is expected to visit the memorial on November 7. Keeping the visit in mind, the government recently asked the New Delhi Municipal Council to put high-powered lights in front of the Ridge area to keep it lit at night.
