The Rajya Sabha officials met MCD Commissioner KS Mehra and Standing Committee Chairman Vijendra Gupta.

"The delegation came after careful examination of the design, location and construction of the Civic Centre. The initiative has been taken with the prior approval of the Chairman of Rajya Sabha, the Vice-President of India. Appreciating the state-of-art design and construction of the Civic Centre, the visiting officials informed that the Rajya Sabha Secretariat needs nearly 20,000 sq ft in view of the fact that a number of committees has gone up from 18 to 24," said Gupta.

The MCD would examine the request of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat in the perspective of the negotiations with and the requirements of the Income Tax Department.

The Income Tax Department requires merely half of the Civic Centre, which is about 5.43 lakh square feet. It is being offered space at a rate of Rs 42,000 per square feet.

A detailed traffic management programme will be implemented with an expenditure of Rs 200 crore to ensure the smooth flow of traffic around the Civic Centre.

MCD Commissioner KS Mehra said: "Special security arrangements would be made at the Civic Centre. A proposal for a helipad at the rooftop of the Civic Centre has been made from the viewpoint of disaster management."
