The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will acquire 17 new eight-coach trains and convert 61 six-coach trains into eight-coach ones to ease pressure on the Red, Blue and Yellow lines of its network.

Most of the trains of the Delhi Metro have only six coaches though the Blue line (Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre/ Vaishali) and Yellow line (Jahangirpuri to Huda City Centre) currently operate a total of 58 eight-coach trains.

The Red line (Rithala to Dilshad Garden) has only four and six-coach trains.

The DMRC will acquire 258 new coaches –- 162 from Bombardier's facility at Savli in Gujarat and 96 from state-run BEML's plant in Bengaluru, an official said.

The new coaches will begin arriving in Delhi in the third quarter of 2016 and all the coaches will be delivered by early 2018.

The Delhi Metro currently carries about 25 lakh people every day on its network with the Yellow and Blue lines being the busiest routes.
