The GoM, headed by finance minister P Chidambaram finalised its recommendations, likely to be placed before the cabinet on Thursday.

Setting-up of an accountability committee of retired judges to oversee the investigations carried out by the CBI was echoed in the meeting, sources said.

The GoM also proposed changes in the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act 1946, which currently governs the CBI.

The changes could include financial autonomy and setting up an autonomous directorate of prosecution for the CBI.

“We have decided that there should be no interference of government or any other agency in the probe carried out by CBI or any other agency. We feel that there should be accountability along with autonomy,” law minister Kapil Sibal said after the meeting.
