Retired lawyer, law student among dead

Retired lawyer Nizamuddin (he used only one name) came to the Delhi high court from Meerut in a desperate bid to save his 20-year-old grandson, a murder accused, from imprisonment.

His effort ended in tragedy when the bomb went off as he waited for a gate pass in the senior citizens’ queue near Gate 5.

“He was hoping the matter would be sorted out today. We were hoping to celebrate but all that is left now is to mourn,” said Sijaduddin, his eldest son.

Daughter Sajida said, “He requested someone ahead of him to change places with him... If only he had waited, he would have been alive.”

About 20 relatives and friends of Jolly waited with bated breath outside the operation theatre of the emergency block at RML Hospital for his surgery to get over. The eerie calm turned into outrage when a nursing attendant stepped out to announce the death of the first-year law student at Amity College, Noida.

“It’s my fault my son is no more. He did not want to go to court today, but I insisted,” his father Manmohan Singh said. “I don’t trust the security system. I have no faith in the government. Those who kill are treated like kings in prison, only to be let free to kill more innocent people.”
