Fondly called 'Sam Bahadur' by Gorkha soldiers, Manekshaw died of peneumonia in 2008.

In a simple ceremony at the Zoroastrian Parsi Cemetary at Ootacamund, Nilgiris, Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, was commemorated by laying his gravestone next to that of his wife, Siloo.

Sam Manekshaw was the first of only two Indian military officers to hold the highest rank of Field Marshal in the Indian Army (the other being Field Marshal K M Cariappa). He led Indian troops against Pakistan in 1971 war which resulted in creation of Bangladesh.
