SC asks UP govt to restore normalcy in Muzaffarnagar riot-affected areas

The Supreme Court today issued notice to the centre and the Uttar Pradesh government on two petitions seeking a CBI probe into the communal flare-up in Muzaffarnagar that has claimed 38 lives and also for providing immediate relief to the victims and other people stranded in the town.

The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Akhilesh Yadav government to take immediate steps in association with the Centre to bring the situation in the communal riotaffected Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh under control and ensure safe passage to those stranded in the conflict zone.

Taking note of seriousness of situation in riot-hit areas highlighted by a group of advocates whose family members were affected by the violence which has claimed 44 lives, the SC rejected the state government’s plea that no orders be passed for the time being.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam disapproved of UP government’s opposition to involve the Centre on the issue of law and order in riot-hit areas of the state.
