SC bench apologises for ‘Taliban’ remark

The controversy surrounding a Supreme Court Judge's "talibanisation" remarks about a Muslim student from Madhya Pradesh insisting on sporting beard in a Christian minority school took a new turn on Monday with the judge apologizing, reports Satya Prakash.

During the hearing of Mohamad Salim's petition, Justice Markandey Katju had on March 30, 2009 allegedly said, "we don't want talibalisation of the country."

However, on Monday, the bench said, “During the hearing, certain observations were made by one of us (Justice Katju). His intentions were not to offend anyone. However, if any one's feeling has been hurt, he apologises and expresses regret in the matter," the bench said in an order.
