SC setback for vedanta mining plan in Odisha

In a setback to the Odisha government and Sterlite Industries, the Supreme Court Thursday restrained the Indian arm of UK-based Vedanta Group from carrying out bauxite mining in the Niyamgiri Hills till the gram sabha of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts in the state give it the all-clear.

In a setback to the Odisha government and Sterlite Industries, the Supreme Court Thursday restrained the Indian arm of UK-based Vedanta Group from carrying out bauxite mining in the Niyamgiri Hills till the gram sabha of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts in the state give it the all-clear.

It gave the gram sabhas three months to decide on issues arising out of the mining project.

The court also cancelled 49 mining leases, reporting maximum illegalities, in Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts of Karnataka.
