One of two alleged robbers, who were caught fleeing with a jeweller's SUV in the dead of night, was shot dead by a security guard in northwest Delhi on Sunday, police said.

The incident, said Tejender Luthra, Joint CP (northern range), was reported from the Subhawna Niketan in Pitampura around 3:45am when "four boys" in a Bolero car themselves broke into the Bolero parked below Heera Jewellers.

"They had parked their own SUV a little away from the showroom and headed towards the other one when two security guards, Kishan and Lalit, stationed outside the jewellery showroom asked them what they were up to," said Joint CP Luthra.

The car, registered in the name of the director of the jewellery showroom, is used to transport jewellery items.
