The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday sought an explanation from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) chairman on the reported supply of contaminated water in the Capital.

The NHRC asked the DJB chief to submit a detailed report within four weeks, explaining the measures being taken to ensure potable water supply to residents of Delhi.

HT reported on August 1 that 67 major water pipelines in the city had developed cracks and were getting contaminated by sewage.

"The NHRC is deeply concerned with the hazards posed to the citizens of Delhi due to supply of contaminated water. The contents of the report, if true, amounts to serious violation of right to health of the people of Delhi," an NHRC spokesperson said.

DJB CEO Ramesh Negi admitted that there was problem in some areas and sought "dedicated utility corridors" to deal with the issue.
