To be held between 6pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, it is at Jantar Mantar that the family has decided to formally break its silence and interact with the media for the first time since Shobhit — a second-year IT engineering student at Faridabad's Manav Rachna University — died on May 5.

As HT had reported on June 22, the Modi family, in the absence of a breakthrough in the case, had embarked on an SMS campaign and sought permission to hold a candlelight vigil at an undisclosed location in central Delhi.

"Though we had applied for permission to hold the vigil at India Gate, we were, instead, only granted permission to hold the vigil at Jantar Mantar," said Suraj Modi, Shobhit's father.

The vigil — which seeks to garner enough public support to transfer probe into the gruesome murder to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) — comes after the Delhi Police's manifest failure to crack the case, despite seven weeks of their own investigation into the matter, in which as many as 500 persons are understood to have been questioned, so far.
