Society pools money to treat its water

A number of residential societies in Dwarka are pooling resources to tackle the water crisis by installing their own reverse osmosis (RO) plants. The Nava Kairali Co-operative Group Housing society is one such example.

The society has spent more than Rs 10 lakh on setting up an RO plant.

RK Panicker, president of the residents’ welfare association, said the society needs 1 lakh litres of water every day for its 135 households.

“DDA had assured us that regular water supply would be provided but, at times, there is no supply for days. What are we to do in such a situation? We all thought of tackling this situation by setting up our own water treatment plant so that the quality of the water can be improved,” said Panicker.

The treated water is not piped to individual homes. All of it is collected in a large tank and residents have to collect water from there for their personal use.

“The tank is placed on the ground floor and residents from top floors have to come downstairs just to collect water. To pipe the water to each kitchen, we would have had to spend more than Rs 60 lakh, which is too much. The society members had no option but to collect water from this tanker.”
