South body shames tax defaulters

Residents and traders of Malviya Nagar, Greater Kailash, Naraina, Yusuf Sarai and Shivalik on Tuesday woke up to an embarrassing morning when they found that their names were being announced on loudspeakers for non-payment of property tax.

In order to sensitise people to clear their pending dues, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation officials roamed about the streets of the city, announcing the names of defaulters.

The move worked as several people approached the vehicle to hand over cheques, requesting the officials not to announce their names before neighbours.

Earlier this month, the corporation beat drums outside 67 commercial properties at prime locations such as Nehru Place, Mahipalpur, Kalkaji, Dwarka, among others.

According to the civic agency, the amount due with each of the tax defaulter runs into lakhs. The officials added that they had no other option than reverting to the traditional method of shaming the defaulters.
