Stop car at your own risk

Around 8:30 on Saturday night Ujjwal Kumar heard a loud thud and he immediately stopped his car. A stone had shattered his car's window, barely 100 metres from his house in Ashok Vihar in northwest Delhi. As soon as Kumar stopped his car, three men on a motorcycle appeared on the scene and one pointed a gun at him.

Around 8:30 on Saturday night Ujjwal Kumar heard a loud thud and he immediately stopped his car. A stone had shattered his car's window, barely 100 metres from his house in Ashok Vihar in northwest Delhi.

As soon as Kumar stopped his car, three men on a motorcycle appeared on the scene and one pointed a gun at him.

They looted Rs 7.2 lakh from him around 200 metres from the local police station.

“One of them went to Kumar's seat and opened the automatic lock of the boot of the car. The other person took out a bag containing the cash kept there. All of them then fled on the motorcycle,” said NS Bundela, DCP (northwest).

The 63-year-old businessman, who deals in battery covers and owns a shop at Kashmere Gate, used to collect cash from all his buyers on a weekly basis.

“We suspect that Kumar's movements were known to the robbers. He used to collect the payment on his own on a weekly basis and return home with the cash,” said the officer.

Police said they would question the employees and other acquaintances of Kumar.

“We have recorded his statement and are trying to locate the motorcycle used in the crime,” said the officer.

A case of robbery has been registered at Ashok Vihar Police Station.

Police said they have shown dossiers of known criminals in the area to the businessman for identification purpose.

“The businessman used to take the same route home every day. On Saturday he was returning after collecting the money from Gokhale market in north Delhi,” said the police officer.

After the robbers fled, Kumar called up the Police Control Room. Fingerprints were lifted from the scene of crime and the police would match them with those available in their records.
